Dear Moldovans,
At the end of the 18th century, at a crossroads in European history, Georges Danton posed a question whose depth is astonishingly relevant today: Can we carry our homeland on the soles of our shoes? National identity is a theme for reflection in modern times, built every day by every citizen. And the witness to the transformations that the Republic of Moldova has undergone, from gaining independence to its path towards European integration, is the coin, the Moldovan leu, whose anniversary we celebrate today.
Each banknote, each coin reflects the history and culture of a people who have fought for sovereignty and look confidently towards the future. Alongside society, the national currency evolves continuously to respond to the challenges of the modern economy, adapting to the fast-paced rhythm of digital transformation.
The National Bank is making sustained efforts to pave the way for secure and modern digital payment solutions, which are now present in Europe and around the world. The Republic of Moldova is part of the big European family and is already a visible presence on the digitization map.
A concrete example is the success of the instant payment solution - MIA. Launched in March this year, MIA has become, in just a few months, an essential tool for cashless payments. Today, one in every five active citizens in the Republic of Moldova uses this innovative solution. The Moldovan Leu now travels faster and more efficiently through the financial circuit, reflecting the dynamism and modernization of financial services.
By implementing MIA, Moldova demonstrates that it can be a regional leader, with performances confirmed by the integration of digital technologies and solutions tailored to the current needs of citizens and the business environment.
Through its role and activities, the National Bank ensures that the Moldovan leu remains not only a symbol of national identity, but also one of progress and stability.
Today we stand at the crossroads of tradition and innovation, and the Moldovan leu continues to accompany us in our daily lives, writing our history, our story.
I hope this day serves as an opportunity to look ahead, with confidence, towards a future in which Moldova will find its rightful place in the European Union – a space of peace, prosperity, and opportunities for each citizen.
