The Governor of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM), Ms Anca Dragu, presented the commemorative coin "Sergiu Rădăuțanu – 100 years since birth" to the distinguished scientist's daughter, a specialist in the physics and chemistry of semiconductor materials, Ms Valentina Rădăuțanu, as a sign of high appreciation for the academician’s contribution to the development of technical education and the formation of the intellectual community in Bessarabia.
The numismatic piece commemorates the centenary of the birth of Sergiu Rădăuțanu (1926–1998), the first rector of the Technical University of Chișinău, a full member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, author of more than one thousand scientific papers, and recipient of numerous prestigious awards.
The commemorative coin enriches the Science and Innovation series, and Sergiu Rădăuțanu's inclusion in this collection represents "a tribute to his exceptional contribution to the advancement of science, education and the country's socio-economic development, alongside other eminent figures in scientific thought," Governor Anca Dragu emphasised.
"Through this numismatic issue, we honour a life devoted to science, as well as an enduring legacy that continues to inspire today's generations and point the way towards knowledge and progress," the NBM Governor said in her address to members of the Rădăuțanu family.
The Governor also noted that the National Bank consistently promotes the numismatic dimension through the annual issuance of commemorative and jubilee coin series reflecting the identity, history and values of the Republic of Moldova, thereby reaffirming its commitment to preserving the memory of those who have shaped the nation's identity and contributed to the country's development and prestige
The commemorative coin "Sergiu Rădăuțanu – 100 years since birth" is made of silver, has a face value of 50 Moldovan lei, and is issued in a limited mintage of 500 pieces. Each coin is presented in a transparent methacrylate capsule and a presentation case, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, Ms Anca Dragu.
