Starting with 11 December 11 2017, the National Bank of Moldo puts in circulation on the territory of the Republic of Moldova the modernised banknote with face value of MDL 5 [1]. This banknote will be accepted as payment mean without restrictions. The previously issued banknotes, with the respective face value, will be into circulation in parallel with the modernised banknotes and will be gradually withdrawn once they are unsuitable for circulation, as a result of their normal wear and tear.
The banknotes’ modernisation through new security features [2] is a common practice applied by most central banks, aiming at reducing the risks of national currency forgery and counterfeiting.
The banknote’s design and size are identical to the previously issued banknotes.
Thus, the "NBM" text will now appear on the metallic thread embedded in the paper to show blue fluorescence in ultraviolet light. The fluorescence may be also seen on the blank area of the obverse, where a green rectangle will be observed in ultraviolet light. The NBM logo and the "NBM" text are inserted inside the rectangle.
The additional security features confer higher quality and credibility to the modernised banknote.
