About the national currency

 

The National Bank of Moldova has the exclusive right to release banknotes and metal coins as the form of currency on the territory of Republic of Moldova. NBM releases banknotes and metal coins through the banking system.

The banknotes and metal coins released by the NBM as a form of currency as well as those that are not retracted are accepted at their nominal value for the payment of all public or private debts on the territory of Republic of Moldova.

NBM’s objective regarding the stability of national currency circulation is the promotion of such politics that provides, accordingly to principles of continuity and credibility, the economy with national currency in strict adjustment with the real necessities of monetary circulation.

Aiming to inform the audience regarding the authenticity of the issued banknotes and metal coins, as well as to maintain the quality of those in circulation, NBM provides the description of safety markings, the criteria determining the degree of damage of the banknotes and coins, as well as the way of their processing.

The withdrawal of improper banknotes and coins from circulation is carried out only by the National Bank of Moldova through the banking system, in order to change or replace the damaged ones.

NBM cooperates with the addressed institutions to protect the national currency against counterfeiting and to maintain the quality of monetary markings in circulation.

When commemorating the events and distinct personalities of national history and literature, promoting national traditions and literature, presenting architectural monuments from the Republic of Moldova that have an historical value, representing the flora and the fauna of the country, the National Bank of Moldova has the right to emit anniversary and commemorative banknotes and metal coins, issued as means of payment and in numismatic purposes.
