According to preliminary data in Quarter III, 2023, the current account of the balance of payments recorded a deficit of US$ 599,24 million, the capital account recorded a positive balance amounting to US$ 24,80 million, and the financial account recorded a net inflow of US$ 633,63 million. As of 09/30/2023, the international investment position amounted to US$ -6 452,75 million, while the gross external debt totaled US$ 9 763,88 million.

The restrictive monetary policy stance configured in a timely manner during 2022 conditioned the recording of a downward trend in the annual inflation rate starting with the end of the previous year, continuing in the first nine months of the current year.

According to preliminary data in Quarter II, 2023, the current account of the balance of payments recorded a deficit of US$ 409,69 million, the capital account recorded a positive balance amounting to US$ 11,65 million, and the financial account recorded a net inflow of US$ 413,92 million. As of 06/30/2023, the international investment position amounted to US$ -6 613,27 million, while the gross external debt totaled US$ 10 242,00 million.

The current inflation forecast, compared to that in the previous inflation report, has been marginally revised downwards over the comparable period.

According to preliminary data in Quarter I, 2023, the current account of the balance of payments recorded a deficit of US$ 545,41 million, the capital account recorded a positive balance amounting to US$ 16,74 million, and the financial account recorded a net inflow of US$ 456,04 million. As of 03/31/2023, the international investment position amounted to US$  -6 437,84 million, while the gross external debt totaled US$ 9 846,19 million.

The year 2022 was characterized by multiple economic and financial challenges. The global economic recovery was slowed by adverse geopolitical factors, but also by the inflationary crisis, which affected most countries in the world.

The year 2022 was marked and overshadowed by the war in Ukraine, and on the economic front – by its consequences, which, superimposed with multiple external and internal shocks, made this year an extremely difficult one in economic and monetary terms.

The downward trend in the annual inflation rate from the end of the previous year continued in the first months of the current year.

According to preliminary data in 2022, the current account of the balance of payments recorded a deficit of US$ 2 275,20 million, the capital account recorded a positive balance amounting to US$ 20,17 million, and the financial account recorded a net capital inflow of US$ 2 357,17 million. As of 12/31/2022, the international investment position amounted to US$ -6 041,22 million, while the gross external debt totaled US$ 9 457,80 million.

The annual rate of core inflation will decline rapidly over the current year, then increase slightly by the end of the forecast horizon.

In 2021, the current account of the balance of payments of the Republic of Moldova recorded a deficit amounting to US$ 1 699,35 million. The capital account registered a deficit of US$ 51,02 million and the financial account recorded a net capital inflow amounting to US$ 1 715,57 million. The international investment position recorded US$ -5 218,42 million, while the gross external debt amounted to US$ 8 765,61 million.

According to preliminary data, in Quarter III, 2022, the current account of the balance of payments recorded a deficit of US$ 618,20 million, the capital account recorded a positive balance amounting to US$ 11,17 million, and the financial account recorded a net capital inflow of US$ 526,46 million. As of 09/30/2022, the international investment position amounted to US$ -5 686,98 million, while the gross external debt totaled US$ 8 885,50 million.

2021 was a year of recovery for Moldova's economy, and at the same time, a year in which the economic situation and not just the economic one, both internationally and domestically, changed dramatically.

The current inflation forecast, compared to the previous inflation report, has been revised downwards for the first two consecutive quarters and for the last quarter of the comparable period and upwards for the rest of the period.

According to preliminary data, in Quarter II, 2022, the current account of the balance of payments recorded a deficit of US$ 441,63 million, the capital account registered a negative balance amounting to US$ 1,65 million, and the financial account recorded a net capital inflow of US$ 465,79 million. As of 06/30/2022, the international investment position amounted to US$ -5 840,94 million, while the gross external debt totaled US$ 8 687,24 million.

The year of 2021 can be considered one of recovery of the national economy after the pandemic crisis and of resumption of activities after the decline in 2020. 

The current inflation forecast relative to that in the previous Inflation Report has been revised upwards through the first quarter of 2023 and downwards for the rest of the comparable period, except for the first quarter of 2024.

According to preliminary data, in Quarter I, 2022, the current account of the balance of payments recorded a deficit of US$ 532,37 million, the capital account registered a negative balance amounting to US$ 7,01 million, and the financial account recorded a net capital inflow of US$ 601,53 million. As of 03/31/2022, the international investment position amounted to US$ -6 115,29 million, while the gross external debt totaled US$ 8 986,79 million.

The annual inflation rate will increase until the third quarter of this year, after which it will follow a downward trend towards the end of the forecast horizon. In the second quarter of 2022, the inflation rate will continue to be above the upper limit of the variation range and will return into the range only in the last quarter of the forecast.

According to preliminary data, in 2021, the current account of the balance of payments recorded a deficit of US$ 1 590,13 million, the capital account registered a negative balance amounting to US$ 50,96 million, and the financial account recorded a net capital inflow of US$ 1 602,58 million. The international investment position amounted to US$ -5 660,97 million as of 12/31/2021, while the gross external debt totaled US$ 9 013,73 million.
