National Bank and the members of its decision-making bodies shall be independent in exercising the tasks conferred upon them by law, and shall neither seek nor take instructions from public authorities or from any other authority.
In order to ensure and maintain price stability over the medium term, the National Bank’s aim will be to keep inflation (measured by Consumer Price Index) at the level of 5.0 percent annually with a possible deviation of ± 1.5 percentage points, considered to be optimal for growth and development of Moldova's economy over the medium-term.
National Bank shall have the exclusive right to issue on the territory of the Republic of Moldova banknotes and coins as legal tender, as well as commemorative and jubilee banknotes and coins as legal tender and for numismatic purposes.

National Bank of Moldova is responsable for the compilation of the balance of payments, international investment position and the statistics of the external debt of the Republic of Moldova.

The Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, Anca Dragu, participated at high-level conference “Central Bank Independence in a Changing World”, organised on 9 February 2024 in Brussels, for constituent members of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which includes the Republic of Moldova.
The meeting was dedicated to the concerns of central banks in the context of a changing world. Therefore, the participants debated current trends and new challenges related to the independence of central banks, issues related to the exercise of their mandates, as well as topics concerning interest rates and financial stability.
In her speech, Anca Dragu highlighted the role of central bank independence and the importance of integrity, transparency and accountability aimed to ensure the credibility and stability of the financial sector.
The Governor of the NBM presented the macro-financial situation and economic prospects of the Republic of Moldova, the achievements in the banking sector, referring to the deepening of international cooperation for the adoption of standards and best practices in fulfilling the criteria for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union.
“Moldova is very determined in its European path. We want the economy to grow in a sustainable manner. We want Moldovans to enjoy the guarantees and benefits that the European Union can offer, democracy, peace, security and prosperity”, Anca Dragu stressed.
The conference in Brussels was organised by the National Bank of Belgium.
The event was attended by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, other important IMF officials, representatives of the European Central Bank, and central bank governors from the IMF's constituent countries, of which the Republic of Moldova is a member, namely: Andorra, Armenia, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Georgia, Israel, Luxembourg, the Republic of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Ukraine. It should be noted that within the IMF, most member states, including the Republic of Moldova, are grouped into jurisdictions called “constituencies” which are represented on the IMF Executive Board by an Executive Director.
The Governor of the NBM, Anca Dragu, attended the conference during her working visit to Brussels, which started yesterday, 8 February 2024, along the bilateral meetings with high-ranking officials of the European Union.
