NBM Governor, Ms Anca Dragu: Human capital is the resource that supports the European modernisation of the Republic of Moldova

Today, 23 June 2026, the Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, Ms Anca Dragu, took part in the official award ceremony for Olympiad winners in Romanian language and literature and the history of the Romanians. The event was held at the “Future Classroom” Centre of the State Pedagogical University “Ion Creangă” in Chișinău.

The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Education and Research, Mr Dan Perciun, the Acting Director-General with the rank of State Secretary of the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova within the Government of Romania, Mr Constantin-Valentin Răducanu, and H.E. the Ambassador of Romania to the Republic of Moldova, Mr Cristian-Leon Țurcanu.

The ceremony included the awarding of nominal diplomas and prizes granted by the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Research in Chișinău. The event is part of initiatives supporting young people with outstanding results in subjects that contribute to the preservation and valorisation of the shared cultural and historical heritage.

In her speech, the NBM Governor congratulated the pupils for their achievements, emphasising that their performance reflects hard work, discipline, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to understand the world through language, culture, and history.
“An educated society is a stronger, freer society, and one that is harder to influence through manipulation. Young people who know their language, literature, and history have solid reference points to understand the present and to build the future responsibly,” the NBM Governor noted.

Ms Anca Dragu highlighted the importance of the younger generation in the process of transformation and European integration of the Republic of Moldova. She also reiterated that education, identity, and integrity are fundamental benchmarks for the development of a modern, stable, and resilient society.

In this context, the NBM Governor referred to progress made in modernising the national financial architecture, including the development of the MIA instant payment system and the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA).

The MIA system, developed in the Republic of Moldova, has exceeded 1.1 million users within two years of its launch, expanding from person-to-person transfers to solutions for businesses and institutions. At the same time, integration into SEPA has contributed to more efficient cross-border euro payments, reduced costs for citizens and companies, and strengthened the Republic of Moldova’s financial connectivity with the European space.

“The Republic of Moldova is undergoing an accelerated process of modernisation and European integration. At the National Bank, we are demonstrating through concrete projects that Moldova has the competence and rigour to operate at high international standards. But the stability of this institution depends on human capital — on well-prepared young people, people of integrity, and people who understand their responsibility towards the future,” Ms Anca Dragu stated.

The NBM Governor thanked teachers for their decisive role in pupils’ academic development, in fostering critical thinking, and in cultivating respect for the Romanian language and historical truth. She also acknowledged the contribution of parents, who provide the support, trust, and balance necessary for achievement.

“Teachers and parents are part of this success. Behind every diploma lies not only a pupil’s talent, but also the patience, effort, and trust of those who guided them,” the NBM Governor stressed.

The award ceremony, now in its fifth consecutive edition, is organised by the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova and is part of the strategy to support young people with outstanding results in subjects that contribute to the preservation and valorisation of the shared cultural and historical heritage.
