Mrs. Anca Dragu, Governor of the National Bank of Moldova

 


Anca Dragu was appointed Governor of the National Bank of Moldova by the Decision of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova of 22 December 2023, following an impressive career in Romania, as well as at the European and international level.

She is the first woman to hold the position of Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, with 27 years of professional experience in the economic, financial and banking, and public sectors. She was also the first woman in Romania to hold the mandate of President of the Senate (2020-2021), and the second woman in Romania's history to serve as Minister of Public Finance (2015-2017).

Anca Dragu started her career at the National Bank of Romania (1996-2001), as an economist, after graduating from the Faculty of Finance and Banking of the Bucharest University of Economic Studies (1996). She specialised in international economics at George Washington University (1999-2000), and in 2007 she obtained a Master's degree in public policy and European integration from the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration (SNSPA), followed by a PhD in economics from Bucharest University of Economic Studies (2010), where she defended the paper on “Mechanisms for ensuring financial stability at the international level”.

Anca Dragu also worked for more than ten years as an economist in the local and regional office of the International Monetary Fund (2001-2013), then continued her career at the European Commission, in the Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Commission (DG ECFIN), as an economic analyst (2013 - 2015) and advisor to the Deputy Director-General (2017 - 2019). From 2019 to 2020, Anca Dragu was Deputy Director-General and member of the Board of Directors of a company in the energy sector.

At the same time, part of her career is dedicated to academic activity. Thus, since 2018, Anca Dragu is an associate professor at the Bucharest University of Economic Studies, as well as at the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration (SNSPA) and Entrepreneurship Academy (Bucharest, Romania), where she teaches macroeconomics and finance.

She is the author of several scientific publications and economic analyses.
