NBM Governor held discussions with the Japanese Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs during his working visit to Moldova

The Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, Anca Dragu, had a meeting with the Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs, Masato Kanda. The meeting took place in the context of the working visit of the Japanese official to the Republic of Moldova on 5-6 June 2024.

During the meeting there was a wide-ranging exchange of views on the macroeconomic situation, the latest developments in the global economy, trade relations and assistance projects between the Republic of Moldova and Japan.

Anca Dragu referred, in this context, to the monetary policy easing measures applied by the NBM: "The base rate applied to the main monetary policy operations was successively lowered from 21.5 percent in November 2022 to 3.6 percent in May 2024, which contributes significantly to increasing the investment appetite in the Republic of Moldova, creates by default the framework for economic development on sustainable principles". "The macroeconomic context has improved, inflation has returned to the annual target corridor of 5.0 percent", the central bank governor added.

Anca Dragu also stressed that the Moldovan banking system is stable and resilient in the face of shocks generated by geopolitical crises, while ensuring a favourable environment for investors.

Together with the US and the EU, Japan is making a significant contribution to Moldova's development, targeting its assistance in various areas, including strengthening monetary policies and developing financial systems.

During his visit to Chisinau, Masato Kanda was accompanied by Toshitaka Nagase, Advisor to the Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs, Miki Hayakawa, Deputy Director of the International Coordination Bureau, Yoichiro Yamada, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Moldova and Shiki Hino, Second Secretary at the Embassy of Japan in Moldova.
