Octavian Armașu: the commemorative and jubilee coins – a precious document about the economic and cultural-historical realities lived/experienced by us and our predecessors

„Commemorative and jubilee coin – value and continuity” is the topic of the event organised by the National Bank of Moldova (NBM), which gathered at the National Art Museum representatives of the bank and academic community, of creative unions, of commemorated personalities’ families through the numismatic coins, 2019 issuance.

At the event opening, the Governor of the central bank, Octavian Armașu, noted: „the liaison between the past and present reflects the commemorative and jubilee coins, via numismatic perpetuity that makes us to perceive them more as a cultural-historical approach, of national authentication – by their messages and of promotion of the image of the Republic of Moldova abroad. These pieces of money art constitute also a precious document about the economic, artistic, literal, architectural realities lived by our predecessors and that we are living at present.”

Hereinafter, the guest of honour, the NBM first governor, Leonid Talmaci, made an incursion into the history of the Moldovan leu introduction over 26 years and its experience of collaboration with the author the national currency design, Gheorghe Vrabie – painter and graphic designer, to whom is dedicated one of these 14 commemorative and jubilee coins, 2019 issuance.

At the same time, the Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, Ion Sturzu, referred to multidimensional destination of the commemorative and jubilee coins: „For some people it constitutes a hoarding modality, for others it is a numismatic approach or money art piece, while for someone it simply has a sentimental signification. This multidimension makes us to perceive deeper the value of coins.”

At the event, there were made numismatic donations to relevant institutions and to the families of the personalities represented on the reverse side of the coins recently issued.

The ceremony marked the end of putting into circulation commemorative and jubilee coins, 2019 issuance, initiated on 29 November – Moldovan leu day.

The first commemorative coin was issued by the NBM in 1996 and was dedicated to the fifth anniversary since the proclamation of the Republic of Moldova independence. Within 16 series, there were minted 166 commemorative and jubilee coins until now, 18 minted in gold, 144 in silver and two in silvered tombac.
