National Bank and the members of its decision-making bodies shall be independent in exercising the tasks conferred upon them by law, and shall neither seek nor take instructions from public authorities or from any other authority.
In order to ensure and maintain price stability over the medium term, the National Bank’s aim will be to keep inflation (measured by Consumer Price Index) at the level of 5.0 percent annually with a possible deviation of ± 1.5 percentage points, considered to be optimal for growth and development of Moldova's economy over the medium-term.
National Bank shall have the exclusive right to issue on the territory of the Republic of Moldova banknotes and coins as legal tender, as well as commemorative and jubilee banknotes and coins as legal tender and for numismatic purposes.
National Bank of Moldova acts as banker and fiscal agent of the State and shall receive from state bodies economic and financial information and documents, which are necessary for carrying out its tasks.
National Bank of Moldova supervises the payment system of the Republic of Moldova and promotes a stable and efficient functioning of the automated inter-bank payment system
National Bank shall inform the public on the monetary policy strategy on the results of the macroeconomic analysis, the evolution of the financial market and on statistics, including with regard to monetary supply, crediting, balance of payments and the state of the foreign exchange market.
National Bank of Moldova is responsable for the compilation of the balance of payments, international investment position and the statistics of the external debt of the Republic of Moldova.

The National Bank of Moldova is organizing today, 21 March 2022, an opening event of the (Global Money Week), which has reached its tenth anniversary. The event is marked all over the world and attracts more and more participants from different levels of society every year.
Thus, the event planned by the central bank will be attended by representatives of public institutions, civil society, pupils and students from the Republic of Moldova and partners within financial education projects in the country and abroad.
Also, the first day of the Global Money Week will be marked by the conclusion of a Partnership Agreement between the National Bank and the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Moldova. Joint efforts in this regard supports citizens providing them with the information they need daily to become familiar and interact with the financial environment.
"There are more and more people who want to know what financial concepts mean and this is understandable. Every year, changes take place locally and internationally in all areas. Today, we live in a new reality, with great challenges and new trials, which determine us to adapt our decisions to current developments and trends. In the Republic of Moldova, the reforms have brought progress in the banking sector, which nowadays is strong, stable and well-capitalized, and we certainly intend to keep and even improve what we have achieved. In this sense, the National Bank of Moldova is taking the necessary measures to ensure the financial stability of our country", says the Governor of the National Bank, Octavian Armașu.
During the event, there will be an online workshop (ZOOM) for young people interested in the financial subject, which will be organized under the financial education project "Give sense to money" implemented by the National Bank in partnership with the Independent Analytical Centre "Expert-Grup".
Thus, the participants will find out or deepen their knowledge regarding the financial system in our country and the specific rights of payment users, etc.
Another workshop will be organized in collaboration with the Economic Press Club for the students from the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Sciences, State University of Moldova.
The National Bank of Moldova joins every year the Global Money Week initiative, to which 176 countries have adhered so far.
