National Bank and the members of its decision-making bodies shall be independent in exercising the tasks conferred upon them by law, and shall neither seek nor take instructions from public authorities or from any other authority.
In order to ensure and maintain price stability over the medium term, the National Bank’s aim will be to keep inflation (measured by Consumer Price Index) at the level of 5.0 percent annually with a possible deviation of ± 1.5 percentage points, considered to be optimal for growth and development of Moldova's economy over the medium-term.
National Bank shall have the exclusive right to issue on the territory of the Republic of Moldova banknotes and coins as legal tender, as well as commemorative and jubilee banknotes and coins as legal tender and for numismatic purposes.

The National Bank of Moldova (NBM), together with the National Museum of History of Moldova and the International Club of Collectors from Moldova, organize an exhibition of coins covering the period from the beginning of our era up to present.
During the exhibition, the NBM will present to the public a collection of commemorative and jubilee coins, as well the drawings of the first monetary means of the Republic of Moldova, accompanied by gypsum specimens manufactured by mints within the minting process.
In its turn, the National Museum of History selected for the exhibition two monetary thesaurus of medieval times found by archaeologists in our geographical area. A thesaurus is composed of Thalers of the 17th century, another – of Ottoman coins of the 18th century. The International Club of Collectors from Moldova will present coins from ancient Rome and Greece and medieval coins of the 15-17th centuries.
The exhibition will take place at the National Museum of History during the period of 29 November - 6 December 2018.
The series of events dedicated to the Moldovan leu at a quarter of a century also includes an official ceremony organized on 29 November 2018. Officials, ambassadors accredited in the Republic of Moldova, representatives of licensed banks, as well as independent experts will attend the event.
During the ceremony, the winners of the essay contest on the theme: “Moldovan Leu at its 25th Anniversary”, conducted during the period of 1 October - 15 November 2018, will be announced.
The national currency - the Moldovan leu - was put into circulation on 29 November 1993.
