“Old coins – New coins”: a unique numismatic exhibition as part of the Global Money Week

The National Bank of Moldova and the National History Museum of Moldova are inviting students and young people to a unique numismatic exhibition “Old coins – new coins”, organised as part of the activities for Global Money Week, taking place from 18 to 24 March 2024. The exhibition showcases monetary relics from ancient times found within Moldova’s territory by archaeologists or its inhabitants, representing the historical heritage of our country.

Visitors will have the opportunity to view copper and silver coins from the Golden Horde (Hoarda de Aur) dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries, issues of Orts, Polish talers from the reign of Emperor Sigismund III Wasa (1586-1632), as well as coins minted in the 16th and 17th centuries by the Holy Roman Empire, the United Provinces, and Spain. Among the archaeological treasures on display are talers from the German states and talers-lei from the United Provinces, considered by numismatic historiography as the ancestors of the Moldovan leu.

This year's edition of the Global Money Week also features workshops for students and young people interested in learning about financial concepts, developing personal budget, and making sound financial decision. The week started with a special activity involving students from the Aristotle Republican Theoretical Lyceum, who engaged in an interactive game simulating monetary policy decisions under the guidance of the Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, Anca Dragu. In the coming days, the central bank’s head will visit the students to hold explanatory sessions on monetary phenomena and other economic, financial, and educational topics.

Young people are encouraged to visit the NBM exhibition hall during the week, where various workshops on financial topics will be organized. These workshops will be held in the premises of the National History Museum of Moldova as part of the national campaign “Financial Education for All”, organized by the NBM in partnership with the independent analytical centre “Expert-Grup” and with the support of the USAID project “Institutional and Structural Reforms in Moldova”.
