The congratulatory message from Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, Octavian Armașu, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the introduction of the Moldovan leu into circulation

Today marks thirty years since the Moldovan leu was put into circulation.

For any independent state, the emergence of the national currency is an important historical moment. For the Republic of Moldova, it was also the first step towards a market economy, the first economic reforms, the first expressions of an independent monetary policy.

The Moldovan leu became the national currency of the newly created modern state the Republic of Moldova shortly after the proclamation of its independence. It subsequently went through countless tests of resistance, but each time it managed to maintain and strengthen the confidence of the citizens. Today, the Moldovan leu has established its role as a means of payment enshrined in the constitution, and the National Bank has the necessary experience to ensure its resilience and maintain a stable and reliable banking sector.

We want every citizen to flourish in the Republic of Moldova, to be able to build a decent life at home, together with their family, and for that we need to know not only how to spend money, but also how to save and invest it. In this respect, for many years the National Bank has been providing financial education for everyone, regardless of age and occupation. We want people to learn the right way to manage their money, to increase their wealth and to contribute to economic development. Therefore, we will do everything in our power to ensure that the NBM remains an independent institution and that its decisions are taken only in the interest of the people of the Republic of Moldova.

The basis of the European integration we are working on together is the welfare of the state and the welfare of every citizen.

Happy birthday to the Moldovan leu! Long live our national currency!
