NBM Governor Anca Dragu met with the Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kenji Okamura

The Governor of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM), Anca Dragu, met in Washington with the Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kenji Okamura.

Discussions focused on the implementation of the current IMF-supported program of the Republic of Moldova, the Financial Sector Assessment Program (FSAP), IMF technical assistance, the macroeconomic framework and medium-term outlook, as well as the European Union's strategy for Moldova's energy independence and resilience.

During the meeting, Mrs. Anca Dragu reaffirmed Moldova's commitment to further reforms, with a focus on strengthening the financial sector, strengthening economic resilience and advancing the European path.

"Working closely with the IMF has been a determining factor in Moldova's progress in key areas such as banking supervision, financial sector governance and improving the transparency of economic policies. These efforts contribute directly to the creation of a stable and predictable climate that is beneficial for society as a whole," said Ms. Anca Dragu.

The discussions included the Financial Sector Assessment of the Republic of Moldova (FSAP) by the IMF and the World Bank, carried out at the request of the NBM, which will help strengthen the NBM's capacity to manage financial risks and promote economic stability. The support provided by the IMF and the WB will also facilitate the promotion of economic reforms, improve the quality of life of citizens and create an environment conducive to long-term sustainable development.

The topic of energy resilience in the context of new global challenges and European strategic objectives was also addressed. Ensuring Moldova's energy independence remains a key priority, integrated in the reform agenda underpinning long-term security and stability.

The dialogue was also an opportunity to explore new avenues for institutional collaboration, including in the field of economic research and analysis, which are important components for informing monetary and macroprudential policy decisions.

The meeting with Mr. Kenji Okamura continued the dialogue held on Tuesday, 22 April in Washington, D.C., by the NBM delegation with other senior IMF officials: Jeroen Clicq, Managing Director for Moldova at the IMF, Alfred Kammer, Director of the European Department of the IMF and Alina Iancu, IMF Mission Chief for Moldova. During these meetings, the main achievements of the NBM in the implementation of the Republic of Moldova's IMF-supported program and the prospects for economic development were discussed.

The NBM delegation, led by Governor Anca Dragu, participates until 26 April 2025, in the Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and the IMF - a global forum that brings together economic and financiial leaders to discuss current economic challenges.
