NBM, together with the National Bank of Romania and the Banque de France, organises the second edition of the international conference on European convergence

The National Bank of Moldova, in partnership with the Banque de France and the National Bank of Romania, is organising the second edition of the international conference on policy coordination for European convergence, entitled "Fiscal Space and Monetary Anchoring under Accelerated Integration."

The event will bring together international experts, policymakers and researchers in Chișinău to examine and discuss the interaction between fiscal sustainability and monetary stability for economies advancing towards deeper integration into the European Union.

The conference will take place on 1–2 October 2026 in a hybrid format (both in person and online). It aims to explore the challenges faced by candidate countries as they accelerate their economic and financial integration into the EU, where the need to mobilise substantial investment while maintaining strict price stability and exchange rate predictability requires close coordination between fiscal and monetary policy.

Initiated by the National Bank of Moldova, the event promotes the exchange of experience among public policy experts while also serving as a forum for the presentation and discussion of research papers submitted in advance by participants.

"Accelerated European integration compresses the time available for convergence. Textbooks describe convergence as a well-ordered sequence of stages. In our case, we are accomplishing within a few years what took others a decade. Economic convergence requires modernised industries, supported by the roads, networks and interconnections that enable them to thrive, and all of these demand capital simultaneously and from the same sources. Investment on this scale can only be financed where price stability and economic predictability are firmly established over the medium and long term. This conference provides a platform where international experience and best practices are discussed in the context of our region," emphasised Mr Mihnea Constantinescu, Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Moldova.

The conference will feature speeches and panel discussions on financial policy and presentations of research papers, providing a platform for dialogue between mature and emerging markets, with a particular focus on the Eastern European context.

Discussions will cover topics including the monetary policy framework for the pre-accession transition, integration into the Single Market and structural convergence, as well as the balance between reform conditionality and the need for countercyclical fiscal policy in response to external shocks.

People interested in contributing research papers are invited to register and submit their proposals to conference@bnm.md by 16 August 2026.
